Call for fairer funding submitted for debate at Full Council meeting

July 11th 2024
The need for a fair deal for Cornwall from Westminster is on the agenda for debate when the full Cornwall Council meets in Truro next week.

The motion, submitted by Cllr Colin Martin, comes after the leader of the council, Cllr Linda Taylor, has written to the new Prime Minister calling for the appointment of a Minister for Cornwall and a new funding formula for local government.

A decision on whether the motion can be debated in full will be taken by the chairman when the meeting is held in the Council Chamber at County Hall (Lys Kernow) on Tuesday (16 July).

Also on the agenda will be the annual report from the authority’s Audit Committee, a Capital Programme update, and an opportunity for councillors to question Cabinet members on their portfolios.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Cllr Taylor said: “As I have just written to the new Prime Minister to outline the need for a Minister for Cornwall and a fairer funding deal, I am pleased to see this motion submitted for debate.

“We have already heard that the Government wants to give power to local decision makers, and I have highlighted to him that alongside that, we need a fairer funding formula that gives justified weight to population profile, sparsity, deprivation and socio-economic factors that are driving demand and cost to ensure Cornwall can prosper.

“If the motion is selected for debate, I look forward to making this point clearly, and I am sure my fellow councillors will agree.”

Tuesday’s meeting will start at 10.30am, and is open to members of the public.  You can also watch proceedings live online via our webcast service.
